ABOUT THE GAME
•    Millersville looks to bounce back against Lock Haven after last week's last-minute 33-28 defeat at the hands of Assumption. Lock Haven suffered a 48-6 loss at Division I FCS program VMI in week one, so both teams are in search of the season's first win.  Audio can be heard on the home of Millersville Athletics, the Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network (MSBN). The broadcast, featuring play-by-play announcer Domenic Panza, can be accessed at www.millersvilleathletics.com. The audio will also be the backdrop for the live video which can be watched at www.millersvilleathletics.com/streaming.
•    The Marauders employed an efficient and big-play passing attack against Assumption, totaling 310 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Quarterback Bill Shirk turned in his second career 300-yard game on 22-of-32 passing. Millersville should be able to keep the aerial assault rolling against Lock Haven. VMI threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns against the Bald Eagles in week one. Shirk's 22 completions marked the first time he completed 20 passes in a game since Sept. 12, 2009, and it was his first 300-yard effort in over a year. The Marauders will also try to get transfer running back Mike Jones rolling. Expected to make an immediate impact, Jones displayed all-around ability, catching four passes in addition to 46 yards rushing on 14 carries, but he was unable to create explosive plays on the ground. His longest run was just 12 yards. Lock Haven was stout against the run in week one, holding VMI to 47 yards on 23 carries.
•    The Marauders' defense endured a difficult week, allowing 33 points and 130 yards rushing against Assumption. The Marauders ranked last in the PSAC in rushing defense a year ago but after one week this season, they are eighth in the 16-team conference. The 348 total yards allowed places them eighth in the league in total defense as well. Those numbers are likely to improve as Lock Haven has struggled offensively in recent history. The Bald Eagles managed one touchdown in week one, marking the 12th-straight game that they failed to score more than 15 points dating back the start of the 2008 season.

EAST MEETS WEST
•    Saturday marks the beginning of the mandated three-game PSAC crossover schedule. Millersville, a member of the PSAC Eastern Division, has faced at least one Western Division team each season since 1992. The full, three-game crossover began in 2006. Since then, the Marauders are 3-9 against PSAC West teams, and two of those wins have come against Lock Haven. The other win came against Indiana (Pa.) in 2006.
•    Coach Greg Colby is 0-6 against the PSAC West in two seasons at Millersville.
•    The PSAC split into divisions into 1960. Millersville has never played new PSAC West additions Mercyhurst and Gannon, but it is 53-96-4 all-time against the original seven (Shippensburg, Indiana, California, Edinboro, Slippery Rock and Clarion). Millersville has a losing record against six of the seven teams, and its record against Clarion is 6-5. With 24 (7-16-1) all-time meetings, it has played Lock Haven more than any other current Western Division member.

ABOUT THE SERIES
•    Saturday's game is the first meeting between the Marauders and Bald Eagles since 2007. Lock Haven holds a 7-16-1 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1928, but the Marauders have won four in a row. The teams did not play for nearly 40 years between 1959 and 1996, but the programs have met four times since then with Millersville winning all four. Millersville outscored Lock Haven 109-28 during that span.
•    Only three players on the 2010 Millersville roster played in the 2007 game against Lock Haven. Chad Miller was a true freshman at the time, started the game and recorded three tackles and a pass deflection. Jamal Smith and Bill Shirk were both redshirt freshmen quarterbacks at the time. Smith started and rushed for 66 yards on 13 carries and completed one pass in five attempts. Shirk went 3-for-6 with one interception.

 THE HEAD COACHES
•    Millersville's Greg Colby is in his third season as head coach. He inherited a youthful roster and a program that hadn't posted a winning season since 2000. He is 4-18 in his first two seasons as the coach. He spent most of his career as an assistant at the Division I level, though. From 1979-86, he was the head coach at Schlarman High School and Naperville High School in Illinois.  While at Schlarman, Colby led the team to back-to-back Illinois High School 2-A State Championships (1981-82).
•    Colby has an impressive resume. He came to Millersville after serving as the defensive coordinator at Northwestern from 2002-07 during which time the Wildcats posted three-straight six-win seasons for the first time in 70 years. He was also the defensive coordinator at Kent State for four seasons and served as a defensive assistant at Michigan State under Nick Saban and at Illinois under Lou Tepper.
•    Entering his sixth season as head coach at Lock Haven University, Klacik has a 5-49 record In addition to being the head coach, he also serves as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for the Bald Eagles. Klacik worked 19 years at Division I and Division I FCS programs. He spent a combined 18 years in two stints coaching at the Division I FCS power, Youngstown State University where he was a part of four national championships ('91, '93, '94,  '97). In his first stay at YSU, Klacik coach under current Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel.  In 2000, Klacik made a transition to the Division I level with Wake Forest as the quarterbacks coach. In his one year stay at Wake Forest, Klacik coach under current Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell.
•    Klacik was a standout wide receiver for the Bald Eagles from 1985-88. He led the team in receiving yards in each of his four seasons at Lock Haven, ranking him eighth in school history with 1,976 career yards. Klacik earned his bachelor's degree in sports/fitness management from Lock Haven in 1988.

SCOUTING THE BALD EAGLES
•    Coming of a 48-6 loss to Division I FCS VMI last week, the Bald Eagles are hoping a return to Division II competition will help them earn their first victory since the final game of the 2007 season. In the loss, they were only able to muster 194 yards of total offense (78 rush, 116 pass), and produced only one touchdown in the waning minutes of the first half.
•    The Bald Eagles gave up 351 yards of total offense, 304 of which were through the air. Last year, the passing defense was a strength as it ranked first in the PSAC in yards allowed per game.
•    Lock Haven was its own worst enemy at times, giving up 113 yards on 14 penalties.  The Bald Eagles were also held to 5-of-16 on third-down conversions and 0-of-3 on fourth-down conversions.
•    Lock Haven managed to control time of position against VMI (34:52) and had zero turnovers despite fumbling once.
•    Quarterback Jarryd Burkett is entering his third season as a starter and threw for 100 yards in week one. Burkett was also the team's second leading rusher, totaling 31 yards on the ground. His TD pass went to sophomore Eddie Celkos. Celkos tied with Brandon Bader for team lead in receptions with four. Michael Bastian is a newcomer in the backfield. He made his first appearance last week and was limited to 34 yards on 10 carries.
•    The Bald Eagles also allowed a punt return for a touchdown and will need to be careful punting to Jamal Smith of Millersville. Smith had just one return in week one but the Marauders ranked third in the PSAC in punt return average last year.

THE LAST TIME OUT
•    One year ago, Millersville stole the season-opener from Assumption with a late interception. But on Saturday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium, Assumption turned the tables on the Marauders when David Canney made a diving, 19-yard touchdown catch with 16 seconds left, lifting the visitors to an improbable 33-28 win.
•    Millersville quarterback Bill Shirk completed 22-of-32 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns including one to redshirt freshman Dominic Sanders that gave Millersville a 28-27 edge with 7:27 left in the game. Assumption quarterback Andrew Kupec, however, answered Shirk's 10-play drive with 15-play, 67-yard drive that chewed up all by 16 seconds of the clock. The strike to Canney--one of 14 times they hooked up on the day--sealed Millersville's fate. The final Assumption drive included two fourth-down conversions--the second of which came on a defensive pass interference call at the Millersville 10-yard line.
•    A short kickoff by Assumption afforded the Marauders a shot at a miracle score. Shirk's first pass fell incomplete, but he found sophomore Mike Jones for 39 yards on the next snap, but before Jones could get to the turf and call timeout, the clock expired.
•    Millersville out-gained the Greyhounds 398 to 348 in total offense, and Jamal Smith totaled 109 receiving yards on a career-high nine catches. Junior Matt Egenrieder also eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the first time in his career, and it was his 87-yard touchdown catch—the second longest in school history—in the second quarter that jump-started a sluggish Marauder offense and closed the gap on an Assumption squad that appeared to be pulling away.
•    Defensively, the Marauders were led by Matt Sutjak's 13 tackles. Pat Maloney registered a career-high 10 tackles.

GROUND TO A HALT
•    The Marauders were limited to 88 yards rushing in the season opener marking the fifth time in the last 10 games that the Marauders have been held to fewer than 100 yards rushing. This has come on the heels of a 22-game stretch dating from 2007 to the first game of 2009 in which Millersville recorded at least 100 yards. Millersville has just two individual 100-yard efforts in the last 13 games.

ASSIST TO THE DEFENSE
•    Zack Riley scored a defensive touchdown for Millersville in week one by returning a fumble off of a quarterback sack. It was Riley's first career touchdown and the fumble return for a touchdown by a Marauder since Derrick Bass scored on a fumbled punt against Slippery Rock on Sept. 6, 2008. It also marked the second time in three season openers under Greg Colby that the defense has generated a touchdown. Against Bentley in 2008, Dan McClellan returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown.

BOMBS AWAY
•    Bill Shirk hooked up with Matt Egenrieder for an 87-yard touchdown pass in the season opener. It was the second-longest pass reception in school history, trailing only Drew Folmar and Sean Scott's 91-yard strike in 2000.
•    Shirk now has two touchdown passes of at least 80 yards in his career. Against West Chester in 2008, he and Jamal Smith connected for an 80-yard TD.

SHIRK FOR 300
•    With 22-of-32 passing, 310 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, Bill Shirk ranks second in the PSAC and 12th in Division II with a 181.6 passer rating.
•    Of the week one performances, only Matt Marshall of East Stroudsburg topped Shirk's 310 yards. Marshall threw for 337 with the same number of completions.
•    It was the second 300-yard passing game for Shirk and the first in more than a season. He last hit the mark on Oct. 18, 2008 against C.W. Post. Shirk's two performances are Millersville's only 300-yard games since 2004.
•    Each of the last three games with 300 yards passing have ended in losses for the Marauders.

DOUBLE THE FUN
•    Both Matt Egenrieder (106) and Jamal Smith (103) recorded more than 100 yards receiving in the season opener against Assumption. It marked the first time two Millersville receivers totaled 100 yards in the same game since Ryan Clift and Omar Sanders on Sept. 4, 2004.

TOUCHDOWN TRIO
•    Bill Shirk threw three touchdown passes in the opener against Assumption. It was the fifth time in his career that he has thrown at least three TD passes in one game. He accomplished the feat twice in each of his first two seasons. He threw four against Kutztown on Oct. 24, 2009. He also threw for three scores in back-to-back games in October of 2008.

MOVING ON UP
•    Bill Shirk has passed for 3,929 yards and 30 touchdowns in 21 career starts. With 310 passing yards against Assumption, Shirk moved past Mike Burke (1971-74) in the record books for seventh all-time in passing yards. Additionally, Shirk needs just 62 yards to pass Gregg Caplan (1982-85) for sixth.
•    Last season, Shirk's 1,734 yards ranked him eighth in the PSAC. Among returning quarterbacks this season, only California's Josh Portis passed for more yards than Shirk a season ago. He entered the year as the active leader of all PSAC quarterbacks in career passing yards.
•    With another 1,700-plus yard season, Shirk will become the first Millersville quarterback to turn in three career seasons of 1,700 or more passing yards since Drew Folmar (1997-2000). He was also just the fourth QB all-time to achieve that feat.
•    Shirk also ranks ninth in career total offense. With 4,034 yards in 30 games, his 134.5 yards per game average is eighth all-time. He has totaled 3,912 of those yards in his last 22 games, which is an average of 177.4 yards per game. Shirk trails Ricke Stonewall for eighth place by just 191 yards, and if he maintains his current average, he could finish the season fifth all-time ahead of Millersville Hall of Fame QB Carmen Lex (1974-77).

IN SEARCH OF SACKS
•    The defense is hoping to increase its pass rush this season. In week one, Shane Gross recorded the team's lone sack. Gross is now tops on the team with five career sacks.
•    Millersville upped its sack total by from seven in 2008 to 18 in 2009, but that total ranked in a tie for 14th in the PSAC. The sack leader, California (Pa.), totaled 37.
•    Millersville's team leader in sacks in 2009 was junior Antwain Brown-Barnes with 4.5. Shane Gross totaled 4.0, and Chad Miller added 3.0. Eight different players tallied at least one sack, but only three players had more than 2.0. While 18 sacks ranked near the bottom of the league, it was the most sacks in a season by a Millersville team since totaling 26 in 2005. Brown-Barnes' 4.5 sacks in 2009 was the most by any Marauder since Tim Schultz and Chuck Koch each recorded 5.0 in 2004. The last Marauder to record double-digit sacks in a season was Lee Rizzotto (11) in 1999.

DO-IT-ALL JAMAL
•    In his first full season at wide receiver in 2009, senior Jamal Smith displayed the ability to be a game changer. Smith averaged 123.4 all-purpose yards per game last season, placing him second in the PSAC.
•    Smith is off to an outstanding start in 2010. He totaled 152 all-purpose yards in the season opener on 103 yards receiving, 25 yards rushing, and 24 yards on one punt return and one kick return. That total placed him fourth in the PSAC.
•     With 103 yards receiving against Assumption in the opener, Smith eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the fifth time in his career.
•    Smith totaled a career-high nine catches against Assumption. He became the first Marauder since Andy Tischbein on Nov. 1, 2008 to record nine catches in a game. That total also placed him second in the league in receptions after the first week.
•    With at least 700 receiving yards this season, Smith would become the first Marauder with back-to-back 700 yard receiving seasons since Sean Scott accomplished that feat during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Additionally, another 1,300-plus all-purpose yard season would mark the first time a Marauder has turned in back-to-back 1,300 yard efforts since Kevin Cannon turned in 1,600-plus yard campaigns in 1994 and 1995.

SMITH FOR THE SCORE
•    Jamal Smith has become one of the top touchdown threats in the PSAC, and he can score from anywhere on the field. He has totaled 25 career touchdowns including 12 receiving, seven rushing and six passing. Nine of the 12 receiving touchdowns in his career have gone for more than 20 yards.
•    Smith's four touchdown outing against Kutztown in 2009 tied Kevin Cannon's school record for receiving touchdowns in a game.
•    Smith's 80-yard grab against West Chester in 2008 was the team's longest completion since Drew Folmar's 91-yard TD pass to Sean Scott in 1999.
•    In '09 Smith joined California's A.J. Jackson and Shippensburg's Mike Harris as the only three receivers with 10 or more touchdowns during the season. Smith's 10 receiving touchdowns marked only the third time in school history that a receiver hauled in at least 10 touchdowns through the air. The last time a receiver hit the 10 touchdown mark was Sean Scott in 2000, and no Marauder has ever had two seasons of 10 receiving touchdowns.
•    Smith averaged 6.5 points a game a season ago, ranking him fourth in the conference and also ranked fifth in catches per game (4.55) and 10th in receiving yards (66.3).

MAKING STOPS
•    Senior safety Matt Sutjak is a prolific tackler for the Marauders. He has led the Marauders in tackles each of the last two years and has totaled 178. He started his 2010 campaign with 13 tackles against Assumption, placing him first in the PSAC in tackles. It was the fourth time in his 23 career games that he has recorded more than 10 tackles in a game. He totaled double-digit stops three times in 2009 including a career-high 15 against Shippensburg on Sept. 26.
•    Last year, Sutjak ranked sixth in the PSAC in tackles with 92. He was the first Marauder to total more than 90 tackles in a season since Joe Hollister, the 2004 PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year. Sutjak was also the first Marauder to lead the team in tackles in back-to-back seasons since Lee Rizzotto (1997-1999). Since tackle stats started being tracked in 1973, only John Petrus (1986-88) and Rizzotto have led the Marauders in tackles for three-straight seasons. Sutjak has an opportunity to join that club this year
•    Millersville has 15 of its top 20 and eight of its top 10 tacklers returning from a year ago. Julius Carter, who totaled 87 stops, is the most significant loss. Still, of Millersville's 810 tackles, 76.8 of the team's tackles were made by players on the 2010 roster.

O CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN
•    The Millersville football team voted a trio of players as the captains for the 2010 season. Seniors Bill Shirk, Jamal Smith and Chad Miller will assume the roles. Chad Miller was also voted a captain in 2009, making him a rare two-time team selection. Both Smith and Miller were named All-PSAC East Second Team last year. All three players have plenty of experience. Miller and Smith are entering their fourth seasons as starters, and Shirk has piloted the team as the quarterback for two seasons.

BACK FOR MORE
•    Four Millersville players were named All-PSAC East in 2009 but just two return. Defensive tackle Chad Miller was named All-PSAC East Second team and wide receiver Jamal Smith was also named All-PSAC East Second Team. In addition to his postseason mention, Smith was selected as the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25 for his four-touchdown, 255-all-purpose-yard performance against Kutztown. Smith was also the 2007 PSAC East Rookie of the Year as a quarterback. That season he threw for 807 yards and rushed for 633.
•    Miller has an opportunity to enter select company as a Millersville defensive tackle. The last Marauder defensive tackle to earn back-to-back All-PSAC East mention was Jamar Gordon in 1995-96.

A GRAND MILESTONE
•    In Millersville's 120 years of football, only a handful of players have totaled 1,000 yards rushing or 1,000 yards receiving in a season. 1,000 yards rushing has been accomplished 14 times since 1970 and only Ricke Stonewall eclipsed that mark twice. Totaling 1,000 yards receiving is even more rare as only Mike McFetridge (1,131) and Sean Scott (1,030) accomplished the feat. They hit the milestone back-to-back in 1998 and 1999.

HOME SWEET HOME
•    The 2010 schedule sets up well for the Marauders early with the first five games all coming at home. A season after playing three non-conference games on the road, the Marauders play all three non-conference games at home, and open PSAC East play with two more home games.
•    Millersville is 128-69-3 all-time at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium but has posted 1-4 home records in each of the last three seasons. Millersville has not won more than two home games in a season since 2004.
